PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
VersaDek Ultra is a slip resistant
waterproof covering that is
resistant to chemicals, mildew, and ultra-violet light. It can be used
both
indoors and out over concrete, plywood or old decking. VersaDek
is made from PVC with polyester embossed onto it for added strength and
flexibility. Rolls are 6' x 120'.
1. SURFACE PREPARATION
PLYWOOD should be clean and dry,
at least 3/8" AC-X installed
according to the manufactures directions. Fill joints, nailheads, etc
with an exterior patching compound following the manufacturer's
recommendations.
IMPORTANT: Do not apply VersaDek
over plywood that has patches
unless they are wood or urethane. Other materials can cause staining. If
you
must use plywood with these patches, break out the patch and replace it
with proper filler.
CONCRETE should have a relatively
smooth finish. Fill any
imperfections with exterior patching compound, following the
manufacturer's
recommendations.
METAL OR PREVIOUSLY COATED SURFACES
require special procedures. Call us for assistance before proceeding
with these installation.
2. DETAILS are shown in
this section. If yours isn't
call (800) 497-3325.
VersaDek should run up the wall 3"
& under the siding. If VersaDek can't
be installed under the siding, invert a drip edge flashing against the
wall, turn the VersaDek up over the flashing and cut off flush
with the
wall & caulk. This method is good on brick or stucco. On rough
stucco grind
off the stucco where it interferes with the flashing. If there are gaps
where the deck meets the wall, use a cant strip [2x2 cut at 45 ).
Otherwise, a bead of caulk will make the transition. See illustrations
below
 |
 |
| WOOD OUTSIDE EDGES need a 1-1/2x1-1/2"x1/2" drip
edge
flashing installed using ring shank nails spaced every 3" See
illustration
On smooth concrete or wood deck edges you may install VersaDek
without
using drip edge metal. Use a quality caulk to glue & seal down the
last
1"of VersaDek. |
 |
| POSTS, should have a 3"collar of VersaDek
installed on them
before installing the flat work. Seal the collar and the joints between
the
collar and the VersaDek by heat welding or use a good quality
caulk. Use
caulk to seal the collar to the post. |
 |
| OUTSIDE WALL CORNERS A piece of VersaDek
is glued on
the wall and down onto the deck prior to the installation of the flat
work.
Seal with caulk. |
 |
INSIDE CORNERS 90 degree corners,
fold the VersaDek at the corner &
cut so they join in the center. Then seal with a good quality caulk.
3. INSTALLATION Plan to
leave 3" of material to run up
the wall & a 3/4" overlap for seams. Mark the C/L of each seam . If
using
VersaSeam system mark 6" on each side as well. These extra lines are to
help keep adhesive away from the seam until after it is cut. Plan to
minimize seams & waste. Avoid seams at stairs or near doors. Run
seams
parallel to the wall. Install on stairs by cutting pieces that just
cover a
tread and riser. [This way the treads are easily replaced.] Before
spreading adhesive unroll VersaDek out onto the surface, make
rough cuts
& half roll it back up. This helps hold the VersaDek in
proper alignment.
VERSADEK ADHESIVE is applied with
a 1/8 V
notch trowel, using a linear
pattern at temperatures between 45 & 90 F. Then unroll VersaDek
into it
while wet. Roll out in a fan pattern using a lightweight roller or
carpet
tube . Keep traffic light & the temperature above 32F at least 8
hours
after installation. Once the surface is done, glue all edges. Follow
instructions on the can. Knife trim VersaDek at flashing edge.
VERSADEK ADHESIVE must be used or warranty is void.
4. HEAT WELDED seams
are done in two steps. First; after
you have installed the sheets of VersaDek, put a 1/4" bead of
caulk on top
of the bottom sheet close to the edge. Be careful too much caulk will
contaminate the seam area. Hold the roller flat, & lightly roll the
seam
lengthwise on the overlap.
VersaDek customers receive a heat
gun kit, which includes a no-charge heat gun rental plus a free
instructional video.
Second: Set up the heat gun by
installing the tip & reducer. Make
sure the tip is oriented horizontally and pointing away from you. With
the
dial set at #6.
Test for the correct temperature setting
by holding the tip about 1/2" away
from a scrap piece. It should turn shiny in 8 to 10 seconds. Adjust the
dial one notch at a time until the proper result is achieved.
Basically you heat just the top edge
until when you roll it the two pieces
fuse together [hold the roller at 45 degrees so that just the edge of
it
contacts the edge of the top piece] . Keep moving the heat gun forward,
following with the roller until the seam is completed. Finally inspect
the
seams for proper bonding, look for loose areas and reseal. What you
want is
for the VersaDek to stick together without becoming shiny.
WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU PRACTICE ON
SOME SCRAPE PIECES BEFORE YOU BEGIN WORK ON THE ACTUAL SEAM.
5. CAULKING The installer
must examine the deck
carefully looking for areas that water could seep into under the worst
weather conditions (wind driven rain, melting snow, etc. ) and take the
necessary steps to prevent it. Caulk all exposed edges, posts, and trim
strips as shown. We recommend the use of a good quality polyurethane
caulking. Which is available from Home Depot [PL brand] or
C.R.Laurence[#M66] (800)421-6144. Due to the plasticized nature of the VersaDek,
a silicone or cheap caulk or sealant will not
bond to its surface.
6. DRAINS Prior to
installation inspect the surface for
proper drainage. If necessary install a good quality drain, following
the
manufacturer's instructions or call us at (800) 497-3325.Note: Standing
water will not harm VersaDek, but you may find it annoying to
have puddles on their deck.
7. VENTILATION is an
extremely important aspect of
single-ply decking. Adequate ventilation of the air space beneath the
substrate is necessary to avoid condensation and the resultant
problems.
The responsibility for adequate ventilation lies with the building
designer
or engineer. If the applicator suspects inadequate ventilation, they
should
point out the potential problem area to the owner or contractor so that
they can remedy the situation.
